Writeup: Better exhuast for 2000+ jeeps.

Post by BacklashXJ » Wed Jun 18, 2008 1:07 am

got my exhuast done... it's a 99' exhaust on a 2000 jeep... so instead of the 2 manifolds (3 ports each) which are constrictive as hell, with 2 pre-catalytic converters and 4 o2 sensors, i got the 99 header which is one piece and has no cats on it. talk about extra flow and sound!

this is the comparison:
Image

now, there were many things that i had to re-do to make it all fit. first, there are 4 sensors in the manifolds and they needed a place to go. since I had one pipe i welded in 2 bungs right next to eachother right below where the header was welded to the pipe, so the upstream sensors would monitor the fuel mixture. then, the cat that i installed (one from summit racing for 55 bucks) was way back where the regular one would be, so i had to extend the wires on the other 2 sensors and weld in 2 bungs behind the cat so the comp won't throw a fit. after that I put in a cutout so that if i wanted to, i could wake up half the united states (it sounds like a cammed 454 big block and no muffler), and get fully free flowing exhuast for more power... and DAYUM that's a lot of power.
this is what it all looks like:

the paint burned off... (dang)

the upstream sensors

the downstream sensors

the cutout

the rest of it. (it comes out below the shackle bolts so it won't hit.)

overall it's a great upgrade that cost me:
119 - header
20 - glasspack
55 - cat
140 - new o2 sensors (for good measure... really expencive measure)
300 - shop to bend up the pipe and put it together. the guy's a master.

650ish = great investment.

weird. they come on a lot of 00+ jeeps including wranglers too.

and yes, it makes the pants fit funny. low end improved the most, so 4lo should prove to kick it up a few notches. i'm going to crozet, VA this weekend for a 3 day trip... so it'll be tested plenty.

i'm gonna go try to find something to record the sound...

Careful, the Motown police seem to be very easy on drunk college students walking around but they arnt as easy on modified vehicles around town. 3 of my 24 stops are via motown police and while they where all very nice to me... Something tells me they would not have happend if I was driving a little plain jane car around.

Just a little FYI

Did get a chance to check the vids out, and its sounds great.

well i'm gonna drive it on the street with the cutout closed... so it's legal beyond legal when it comes to exhuast. the rest of the jeep... that's a different story
