Don't know. You might be better off just looking for a 242 out of a XJ. although I'd think most Man trans XJs would have a 231.
I just happen to have a 242 out of a 90 Auto trans 4.0L XJ.

I'm pretty sure all XJs with a manual trans came with a 231 from the factory, but I think I saw a write-up on NAXJA where someone installed a 242 with an AX-15.

You'll be better off to stay away from the 242 and get a 231. Much more aftermarket support.

Re: Liberty 242 into XJ?
I'd prefer to have full time 4wd as an option for what I plan to do with the rig (dd/weekend wheeler). That and I enjoy driving quickly in snow.
Planned on getting a 242 somewhere down the line anyways and saw that Lifted was selling one and I'll be in that area. More of just a curiosity as to if it can be done.

Re: Liberty 242 into XJ?
The Libby t case ought to bring a good $$ to resale if you can get it cheap. XJ 242's are a dime a dozen so to speak. It'd be easier to get one out of a XJ and use it. I'm with you I prefer a 242 over a 231 on a DD/Street wheeler. I was happy to see my ZJ had a 242. I have seen more broken 231's than 242's.

Re: Liberty 242 into XJ?
The liberty 242 doesn't have a pick up for the speedo. The liberty gets the speedo reading from the rear axle so I don't think it would work.

Probably because there are more 231's being wheeled.highlandercj-7 wrote:...I have seen more broken 231's than 242's.

Re: Liberty 242 into XJ?
The Liberty used a couple different autos and they only used manuals in the four cyls. Not many of those around. The input shaft is unique to the Liberty so you'd have to change it.Not worth the effort IMO.

Re: Liberty 242 into XJ?
Ive seen a few v6 manuals but the biggest problem is that there is no speedo drive on a liberty, it uses a tone ring in the rear end.
