Trail Mapping

For the several years I’ve been using MotionX on my iPod and iPad for mapping. I have a Dual XGPS receiver that connects via Bluetooth to my iPad so I don’t need cell service. I also download maps ahead of time so I don’t need cell service/WiFi for that either. I use it for both recording and following tracks. Although it still works well MotionX hasn’t been updated in a while. What’s everyone else using? I’m wondering if there’s something better. I’m toying with the idea of replacing the stereo in my TJ with something that will run some sort of trail mapping software so I don’t have to have my iPad mounted to the dash. Thoughts?

I like GaiaGPS. Has Android, iPhone and web apps for manipulating the data.

What are my options for displaying that on something permanently in the dash of a TJ? I’m fine with using my phone to “host” it as long as I can tuck the phone away somewhere and display/control it from the stereo screen. BTW...cheap is good.

Android based head unit is the cheapest and easiest option that I know of.
